Funding the Initiative
The Board of the Dictionary of Sydney seeks funding support from all individuals and institutions interested in helping to achieve the aim of making this one of the world's great historical dictionaries and a resource that the wider community of Sydney can be proud of.
It currently receives support from the City of Sydney, and from a number of Sydney cultural institutions involved in the successful application for Australian Research Council (ARC) funding in 2005 (see below). See also Partners and Supporters.

Australian Research Council
In 2005 the Dictionary of Sydney project was awarded major funding support of nearly $1m over five years through the Australian Research Council. This successful grant was the result of a collaborative bid through the University of Sydney involving a team of researchers from the City of Sydney Council, University of Technology Sydney and the University of Sydney. The main project industry partner is the City of Sydney Council and the other partners are the State Library of NSW and State Records. These funds will provide major research support and infrastructure for key parts of the overall project, primarily through administrative support for the research , writing and collection of historical material to be incorporated in the Dictionary and for innovative research into the new web-based technologies that will ensure that the on-line Dictionary will be at the forefront of web enabled historical resources.
The Board will be seeking other forms of funding support, including other ARC grants, to ensure that the project is sustained and growing.
Sydney Mechanics School of Arts
The Sydney Mechanics School of Arts is providing $75,000 over three years to fund a part-time research and writing position.
Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority
The Sydney Harbour Forshore Authority contributed $25,000 to work of the Dictionary in mid 2009.
City of Sydney
In August, 2007, the Dictionary was awarded a $30,000 grant under the 2007/8 Grants and Sponsorship Program.
Macquarie Group Foundation
The Macquarie Group Foundation donated $11,000 in 2008 to assist the development of the Dictionary.
